The French upcycling label is strengthening its support for Palestine.
Entitled “Galbi” (“my heart” in Arabic, editor's note), IsisDünya's new collection pays homage to the Y2K aesthetic of R&B clips from our adolescence and uses the keffiyeh as the main motif. Dyed in pink or red, the traditional Palestinian scarf is available here as a crop-top, jacket, jeans or dress, and illustrates, once again, the philosophy of Dünya Boukhers, creator of the brand.
Upcycling and a strong political message
The young Turkish-Algerian offers inclusive creations, inspired by her own cultural heritage. “Unfortunately in 2022 in France, being inclusive becomes a political fight but I think that elsewhere it would not have had the same connotation”however, the designer told us during an interview in 2022. Even if it means being political (in spite of herself), Dünya Boukhers today embraces this label which she defends with subtlety, by integrating the keffiyeh pattern into everyone's clothing. days. A scarf that young people have largely re-appropriated in their outfits to continue to keep their fight for a free Palestine alive.
The Keffiyeh in fashion
A decision which is reminiscent of that of Michael & Hushi, who, in 2001, were already imagining a keffiyeh dress, rehabilitated by Bella Hadid last May, in Cannes. “Scarves are political”Iranian designer Hushi Moretzaie declared in 2001 in an interview with WWD, “But we use them as beautiful pieces of fabric.” For his part, his sidekick, Michael Sears, sees the ornaments of the keffiyeh as something aesthetic, an “mixture between houndstooth and gingham”.
A speech which joins that of Dünya Boukhers, who works exclusively with the help of dormant stocks or finds at flea markets and at Emmaüs, where she finds “lots of patterns” who do “a nod to North Africa, the Middle East or South America”. A motif intrinsically linked to a political fight, but from which one thing cannot be taken away: its beauty.
Some pieces from this “Galbi” collection can be found now on the IsisDünya eshop.
