Opera in two acts. Book by Felice Romani. Premiered on December 26, 1831 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
While the moon is already high in the sky, a crowd of worshipers buzzes with a thousand rumors. Will the one they are waiting for with such impatience come to exercise her mysterious art before them? Some doubt it, others feverishly await her appearance. Finally, silence falls and their idol advances to meet them to lend himself to the ancestral worship, eyes closed and arms crossed on a sublime adornment. Time seems suspended on his lips which form an enigmatic smile on his impenetrable face. The long-awaited miracle occurs: his golden voice rises in the greatest of meditations to intone his eternal hymn, “Casta Diva”, dedicated to the lunar goddess. Behind this unfailing assurance, however, are hidden the wounds of a woman betrayed in her love and tired of her priesthood.
Of all the romantic bel canto roles, that of Norma is renowned as one of the most demanding, requiring exceptional qualities from its performer. Abandoned at the start of the 20th century, it was Maria Callas who brought it out of its relative oblivion and made its cavatina a signature tune, going so far as to proclaim: “Bellini composed Norma for me. » Since then, the greatest performers have seized it. It is Karine Deshayes’ turn to perpetuate this legacy in a new show by Marie-Eve Signeyrole directed by Andrea Sanguineti.
