Euro 2024: Georgia causes quite a surprise by beating Portugal, 2-0

Georgia pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Euro history on Wednesday, beating Portugal 2-0 to advance to the last 16.

Needing a win to reach the round of 16, the Georgians scored their first goal after just 93 seconds.

George Mikautadze intercepted a pass and allowed Khvicha Kvaratskelia to score with a low shot.

Antnio Silva made the blunder which cost his team a goal, in addition to a second for a penalty shot, tripping Luka Lochoshvili in the penalty area.

Georges Mikautadze aimed low and beat Diogo Costa in the 57the minute.

“We can fight against everyone,” Kvaratskhelia said. I’m so proud. »

Playing in a first major tournament, Georgia therefore advanced in the table as one of the best third place teams.

Portugal had already qualified in Group F, after two victories.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who felt he deserved a penalty shot in the first half, kicked a water bottle when substituted in the 66the minute.

Ronaldo received a yellow card for his protests after the sequence.

Portugal created little in the second half as the Georgian defense lagged behind, but the 2016 champions had chances in injury time.

Giorgi Mamardashvili maintained the two-goal lead with saves against Nélson Semedo and Diogo Dalot, while Francisco Conceição narrowly missed the target.

At the final whistle, Georgian players sprinted off the bench to hug Mamardashvili as a group and jumped for joy in front of their noisy supporters.

Belgium 0 Ukraine 0

Belgium advanced to the round of 16 via a 0-0 draw against Ukraine.

The four clubs in Group E concluded the group stage with four points each.

Romania, however, took first place ahead of Belgium and Slovakia, in order. Ukraine finished in last place by virtue of the for/against goal differential.

The Belgians, third in the world, could have experienced a completely different fate after Ukrainian substitute Ruslan Malinovskyi tried to score directly from a corner kick at the end of the match.

Koen Casteels, however, managed to box the ball narrowly at the near post.

Belgium will face France in the next round.

Romania and Slovakia can progress

Romania and Slovakia also drew, 1-1. This result allowed both countries to qualify for the round of 16.

During a second half marked by a thunderstorm and a sustained downpour, the two teams exchanged golden scoring chances — even if the draw suited both countries.

Slovakia took control at the 24e minute of play, after Ondrej Duda had skillfully redirected a shot into the corner of the net with his head.

Razvan Marin, however, leveled the score at 37e, following a penalty shot. This was awarded following a video replay confirming that Ianis Hagi was tripped in the penalty area.

Romania advance to the qualifiers for the first time since Euro 2000 when Hagi’s father, the legendary Gheorghe, was the team captain and he wore the no 10 — the same as his son.

Türkiye 2 Czech Republic 1

Cenk Tosun scored in stoppage time to send Turkey into the round of 16 with a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in Hamburg.

At the 66e minute, Czech captain Tomas Soucek hit back to Hakan Calhanoglu’s net, but it wasn’t enough to keep his country in the tournament.

Since the 20e minute, the Czechs were dealing with the expulsion of midfielder Antonin Barak.

The Czech Republic finished last in Group F, while Turkey finished second in the group with six points.
