After being excluded from the ID group in the European Parliament, Germany’s far-right party is considering joining forces with other parties to form a new camp. At the risk of reinforcing their extremist and nationalist image.

Is there always strength in unity? After being excluded from the Identity and Democracy (ID) group in the European Parliament – which includes the French National Rally – the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is looking for allies. The formation of a new group, called “The Sovereignists” and bringing together several nationalist parties across Europe, was even well underway.

But this Tuesday, June 25, the AfD delegation decided to put this project on hold, although it was to be announced by the end of the week. As a reminder, in order to be registered in time before the first plenary session of the European Parliament, any new group must be announced by Thursday July 4.

The reason for this hesitation: certain party officials fear being associated with an (even more) extremist image, while they are trying to get rid of theirs, according to information from Euractiv. If the group could have been formed from a technical point of view, some candidate parties still need to be “checked once more to see if they are satisfactory”explain members of the AfD.

Among the candidates deemed problematic were the Our Homeland Movement and SOS Romania, openly pro-Russian Hungarian and Romanian parties, as well as Republika, a Slovak neofascist movement. After their re-examination, the question of the formation of a new parliamentary group will be on the menu of the AfD conference at federal level, scheduled for this weekend.
