The winter viability system put in place

In place since November 18, this system will be in force on Seine-et-Marnaise roads until 17 mars 2025. It aims to “monitor weather conditions and intervene in a targeted manner to keep roads passable in the event of snow or ice“, according to the press release from the Department of Seine-et-.

While a first cold snap is announced for this week, the system of winter viability is therefore primarily aimed at optimizing the safety of road users.

A three-level device

In Seine-et-Marnethe road network is classified into three levelsof service: the priority network where traffic is densest (1,066 km), the intermediate network (751 km) and the low traffic network (2,599 km), treated occasionally to avoid specific risks.

For four months, winter viability will mobilize 310 agents departments distributed in 16 road centerswhile 31 teams will be ready to intervene 24/7. The coordination center, located in , will centralize the information collected in the field by agents equipped with sins and data provided by weather stations. This monitoring will make it possible to adapt interventions to climatic conditions in real time.

This winter viability costs 3.5 million euros

And one preventive treatment (salting operations in particular) is firstly planned to avoid the formation of ice, it will give way to a curative treatment (salting and scraping) in the event of snowfall or widespread icy conditions. As such, the Department, which works closely with 181 municipalities, will be able to receive support from farmers and local businesses.

Users can stay informed of road conditions by phone (0 800 077 001, free call), thanks to site internet www.seine-et-marne.fr (real-time weather alerts), on social networks of the Department and via a cartography live update.

The annual cost of this system amounts to 3.5 million euros. During the last winter viability campaign, 2,390 tonnes of salt and 2,280,350 liters of brine were used for a total of 16 interventions.
