A painful decision

Pedro Bettencourt had to make the difficult decision to hang up his crampons. At only 29 years old, and after suffering several concussions, the Portuguese player had no other choice. “It was not a simple decision but it was the most obvious. There is this regret of not having been able to say goodbye to the field and to the club as I would have liked,” he declared with emotion.

An impressive journey

Arriving in Oyonnax in 2019 from Newcastle Falcons, Pedro quickly made his place. Before that, he played for ASM Clermont Auvergne and US Carcassonne.

With 75 games played for Oyonnax and 7 tries scored, he was a key part of the team, notably participating in the title of French Pro D2 Champion in 2023. He also shone with the Portuguese national team, playing a crucial role during the World Cup in France.

A player and a man appreciated by all

Oyonnax manager Joe El Abd paid tribute to Pedro, highlighting his impact on and off the pitch. “Pedro was one of my first recruits as manager. He left his mark on the club and will always be part of the Oyonnax Rugby family. We support him in this new stage of his life,” he said.

A new stage

Even though his playing career is over, Pedro Bettencourt will remain a valuable member of the Oyonnax Rugby community. The club is by his side for this transition, ready to help him navigate this new phase of his life.

Pedro Bettencourt leaves the field, but his legacy in Oyonnax and in rugby remains intact. He gave us memorable moments and will always remain an Oyoman in the hearts of fans.
