On Tuesday, a 41-year-old firefighter died after being hit by a speeding car. The four people in the vehicle fled before being taken into custody. They may have been under the influence of nitrous oxide balloons.

Another tragedy. On Tuesday, four people in a car, a woman and three men aged 16 to 26, fatally crashed into a motorbike stopped at a red light in Nice on the Promenade des Anglais. Aboard the two-wheeler, a 41-year-old firefighter, father of two children, was returning from his shift. The man was thrown 80 metres, a shock of unheard-of violence: “On the scene, our colleagues discovered that the two-wheeler had been thrown more than 150 metres. There are people who have taken the life of a father today. I tell you, that’s enough,” explains Laurent Martin de Fremont, departmental secretary of unit SGP 06, on CNEWS.

DRIVERS IN A DELIRIOUS STATE?

On surveillance camera images consulted by the police, the four people in the car appear to be consuming nitrous oxide balloons and are said to be in a delirious state. A case that provokes a reaction in Nice where the residents are angry: “During the day Nice is very calm but in the evening we feel that there is a relaxation. It’s unfortunate, especially when you think about family,” explains a passerby at CNEWS. “It’s absolutely not surprising, it’s a question of education which unfortunately is extremely lacking,” adds another resident of Nice.

The consumption of nitrous oxide balloons is very dangerous and the risks are numerous, such as asphyxiation from lack of oxygen, loss of consciousness, burns from the cold of the expelled gas, disorientation, and dizziness.

An investigation into manslaughter has been opened and toxicological analyzes are underway.
