Euro 2024

At around 11pm, the 16 teams qualified for the knockout stage will all be known. This Wednesday, June 26, officially marks the end of the group stage. While more than half of the teams that will play in the round of 16 have been identified, there are still some uncertainties that this final day will have to clear up. Particularly with regard to nations that still hope to be selected as the best third-placed team. But the remaining places will be expensive, with more disappointed than satisfied teams at the finish.

Every morning, before the matches kick off, TF1info dissects the day’s program across the Rhine.

The goal that must be revisited

We would obviously have liked this goal from Kylian Mbappé to be synonymous with first place in the group for the Blues. In the end, it’s not the case. Tuesday June 25, the French team was held by Poland (1-1) and forced to finish in second place in its group, a first since the arrival of Didier Deschamps on the French bench.

Despite this negative point, the Blues finally scored. We had to wait until the second period, and a penalty converted by their number 10. The French captain, back after his broken nose against Austria, became the first French scorer in this Euro 2024. The future Real Madrid player also scored his first goal in a Euro, after his sixth match.

The poster not to be missed

Georgia-Portugal (Pool F). Kick-off at 9 p.m.

There’s a world of difference between these two. On one side, the Portugal of Cristiano Ronaldo, world ogre, 2016 European champion and candidate for final victory, on July 14, at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. On the other, the Georgia of Georges Mikautadze, Tom Thumb of this Euro, novice in a major international tournament. In this match of opposites, which seems more than unbalanced on paper, the selection coached by Willy Sagnol is both close to the exit and to achieving a historic feat.

Four days after obtaining their first point in a major competition, against the Czech Republic (1-1), the Georgians have an incredible opportunity to qualify for the round of 16. To do this, they will have to bring down the Selection, already qualified and assured of finishing first in its group, but which, even if reworked, aims to continue its rise in power. But don’t they say that in football everything is possible?
