The re-election of the whimsical Trump has triggered political reactions, also in Switzerland. The opportunity for many commentators to emphasize our cultural differences or even to demonstrate deep incomprehension for a choice deemed irrational. Forgetting a little quickly that in Switzerland we also have our share of surprising elections. Thus, we recently re-elected with Pierre Maudet a politician convicted of accepting an advantage. A historical look allows us to identify more pleasing similarities between the United States and Switzerland. In Zero hourRolf Holenstein traces the heated discussions within the commission responsible for drafting a new Constitution for Switzerland in 1848, when it came to knowing whether to draw inspiration from the “American model”. The intellectual Paul Troxler even went so far as to translate the American Constitution for the Swiss public and make it known through flyers. With success, the commission ended up lining up behind a two-Chamber solution.
