Self-proclaimed “candidate of truth”Jordan Bardella let his speech as aspiring prime minister get bogged down in a lie: that of treating every citizen equally. “No rights will be taken away from a single Frenchman, from a single Frenchwoman, and our political action will work in all circumstances to maintain existing rights”promised the president of the National Rally (RN) at the conclusion of the presentation of his program for the early legislative elections, Monday June 24, in Paris.

If the MEP and the far right come to power, millions of French people would risk losing a right, and not the least important: that of exercising certain professions in public administration. “As for dual nationals, I confirm that the most strategic positions in the State will be reserved for French citizens and French nationals”, he asked, assuming to discriminate, among the French, those who have another nationality. Jordan Bardella wishes to prohibit the latter from accessing “strategic positions linked to the security or defense sectors”in the name of the fight against foreign interference. “It actually concerns very few positions and very few people, so it’s anecdotal”he tempered.
Applied literally, the RN’s discrimination would, however, affect millions of people in hundreds of thousands of jobs. Transcribed in a bill tabled in January by Marine Le Pen, the proposed referendum on immigration that her party dreams of submitting to the French would engrave in the Constitution the possibility of prohibiting, by a simple ” Organic law “, “access to jobs in administrations, public enterprises and legal entities responsible for a public service mission for people who have the nationality of another State”.
Extremely wide scope of application
Former general secretary of the RN group in the National Assembly, Renaud Labaye defended to the Mondebefore Jordan Bardella’s press conference, the extremely broad scope chosen. “We don’t want to close any doors and leave ourselves the possibility of legislating according to current events or the geopolitical situation”assumes the close collaborator of Marine Le Pen.

Proof of the embarrassment aroused in the frontist ranks by this proposal, several RN executives have given various interpretations of this breach of equality in the media. For Sébastien Chenu, spokesperson for the RN, “when you have dual nationality, you have the same rights as a national citizen since by definition you are French”except to occupy certain “extremely strategic and specialized jobs, the list of which is made by decree”.
