True to the first, Vice-Versa 2 does not disappoint. We find Riley struggling with the torments of adolescence and new, terribly well-drawn emotions, both literally and figuratively.
They are back. Nine years have passed since their first appearance on the big screen in Vice-Versa 1 –Inside Out in English version – but Anger, Joy, Disgust, Sadness and Fear have not aged a bit. No doubt, the five emotions continued to bicker affectionately off camera to make their young hostess go through all the colors of childhood. But now, his daddy’s little “marmoset” is now 13 years old and… nothing is going well! New emotions arrive unexpectedly in Riley’s cerebral district. Their names: Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy and Boredom. Çstop laughing! Or rather it laughs even more in the face of the torments of adolescence passed through the tangy filter of Vice-Versa 2.
In the latest from Pixar Studios, by Kelsey Mann, Riley takes part in a summer ice hockey camp with Bree and Grace, her two best friends, whom she will not find at her high school at the start of the next school year. A detail that is important because Valentine will be there. In this changing context, Riley is assailed by new emotions, first and foremost Anxiety. Connected to alternating current, the leaping creature, orange and shaggy, clings hysterically to the controllers of the teenager’s brain. At her side, the blushing and clumsy Embarrass is not getting anywhere, Envie distils her dubious advice and Ennui… Ennui struggles to extract her nonchalance from the sofa and let go of her cell phone. It looks like it. Everything is there, even the “sarcasm loophole”.
True to Vice-Versa 1this intelligent sequel tackles in a joyful and explosive way serious questions such as self-esteem, the belief system, the place of memories… The drawings are successful, the dialogues tasty, everything can be enjoyed indifferently at a child’s level or adult, but adolescents and their parents, present and past, will find a particular flavor there.
