This year, the Jardin des Plantes is hosting a new edition of its famous lantern trail, entitled “Jurassic en route to Illumination”. To be discovered from November 20 to January 19, 2024, this exhibition takes us back in time this year. Monumental creatures come to life through majestic light sculptures, transforming the park into a true open-air museum. The Lantern Festival of Garden of Plants is experiencing its 6th edition this winter 2024-2025. This light walk, which is a great success in the run-up to the end-of-year holidays, has become a must! After plunging us into the seabed, taking us into the world of dinosaurs, before taking us into the World of the Tiny, this time the Jardin des Plantes invites us to explore the rich ecosystem of the jungle. Of November 20, 2024 to January 19, 2025 we therefore meet at the Jardin des Plantes to discover a unique and fun route.
Immerse yourself in the heart of the Jurassic period during a nighttime stroll in the Jardin des Plantes, illuminated by animated monumental sculptures. Discover fascinating paleoenvironments where dinosaurs, marine reptiles and the first birds come to life, far from the myths about T. rex and Triceratops. An immersive and educational experience to explore the biodiversity of a bygone era.
You will have understood, this colorful nocturnal stroll is about to take us on a journey into the past. This immersion in the heart of the Jurassic period will take us to the great depths of the ocean, to marshy environments and to green valleys… The age of reptiles is ours!
During the Jurassic period, between 201 and 145 million years ago, Pangea, an immense supercontinent which included almost all of the land surface, ceased to exist. The continents continued to fragment and move away from each other.
This geographic separation favored the opening of sea lanes, allowing marine organisms to disperse across the globe. Simultaneously, pterosaurs began to dominate the skies, while the first birds appeared. Mammals and plants, for their part, have experienced great diversification.
The exhibition “Jurassic in the process of enlightenment” invites us to explore this fascinating period through an immersive journey highlighting emblematic species. Among them, you will discover marine reptiles, dinosaures terrestres and ruffles reconstructed to real size, as well as the first mammalsmany fossils of which are preserved in the Gallery of Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy of the Jardin des Plantes.
This fantasy epic takes us to five distinct Jurassic environments, revealing the diversity of flora and fauna in different periods. The adventure begins in the deep seas from the Lower Jurassic, populated by marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs. Then, the Jurassic abyss medium reveal bioluminescent creatures around black smokers. Rising to the surface, a lagon tropical of the Late Jurassic period is teeming with marine life and flying dinosaurs. The exploration continues in a wooded valley where ferns and cycads thrive, before ending in a Cretaceous swamp nascent, where gigantic dinosaurs coexisted with small mammals.
