POLITICS – A symbolic victory for the defenders of Palestine. This Wednesday, November 20, the Office of the National Assembly recorded the transformation of the France-Palestine International Study Group into a friendship group, according to information from LCP confirmed immediately after HuffPost.
This development had been demanded for a long time by the left (now in the majority in the Bureau), but also by the MoDem, a group within which the deputy Richard Ramos had mobilized extensively during a previous attempt in May, which had failed.
Unsurprisingly, this difference in status is to the delight of rebellious France, which has made the defense of the Palestinian population in the war in the Middle East one of the major axes of its speech. “ After years of fighting, the National Assembly is today creating a France-Palestine friendship group. A major symbolic step thanks to the work of my colleague Nadège Abomangoli”greeted on the social network

First symbolic step
« At our request, the National Assembly is finally creating a France-Palestine friendship group. This is an important step. France must immediately recognize the State of Palestine! », Added the national coordinator of France Insoumise, Manuel Bombard. “ In the context of the ongoing genocidal war, this group is more essential than ever to work in solidarity with the Palestinian people and promote a just peace », applauded the communist deputy Elsa Faucillon. “We cannot move forward together if we have asymmetry in our National Assembly” with the France-Israel group, Richard Ramos argued to AFP, ahead of this Wednesday's vote.
On the other hand, other parliamentarians have strongly expressed their opposition to such a project which, paradoxically, is not debated in the Senate where a France-Palestine friendship group has existed since 1995. In a letter made public by Caroline Yadan, Renaissance deputy of French people abroad in the constituency covering Israel, the president of the Macronist group Gabriel Attal argued that such a development contravenes the criteria set by the Assembly, namely the existence of diplomatic relations with France, the existence of a Parliament and recognition by the UN. Three conditions which are not met by Palestine, but which bother the opponents of this project less when it comes to the France-Quebec friendship group, which does exist even if it deviates from the aforementioned rules.
It now remains to be seen who will chair this group, seen by its supporters as the first symbolic step towards recognition of Palestine. This question will be decided at a later meeting, possibly scheduled for next week.
