Highly anticipated federal by-election takes place Monday in Ontario

TORONTO — Residents of the federal riding of Toronto—St. Paul’s, Ontario, will go to the polls on Monday to elect their new MP in Ottawa, under the watchful eye of many observers of the political scene who are eager to see if the Liberals will be able to keep this stronghold.

The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of former Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett, who held the seat for more than 25 years and was recently appointed ambassador to Denmark.

While the Conservatives maintain a considerable lead over the Liberals in national polls, the result of Monday’s by-election will be one to watch, since the race appears closer than one might have expected in this Liberal stronghold.

The Liberal candidate, Leslie Church, spent most of her career as a member of the political staff of various elected officials. She has notably served as chief of staff to several ministers, most recently to the Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland.

His main opponent, Conservative candidate Don Stewart, is a finance and marketing specialist.

Mr. Stewart has, among other things, previously worked for the public affairs firm owned by Jenni Byrne, who is a longtime Conservative campaign manager and is also a key, though unofficial, advisor to the party leader. , Pierre Poilievre.
