On the synthetic pitch of the Jean-Claude Lafontaine sports complex in Cayenne, the clicking of the leather of the balls and the whisper of the little voices of the Baby section of the ASL Sport Guyanese collide and rise. Nearly a dozen budding footballers repeat the fundamentals: ball handling, passing, dribbling. On Saturday morning from 8 a.m., the Baby section, dressed all in yellow and black, opens the training sessions. They are the new heirs of a century-old heritage.

At the beginning of the 20th century, football became a fashionable sport in Guyana. A group of friends from the middle class, including many Logiens, descendants of West Indians who took refuge in the territory after the eruption of Montagne Pelée in , meet in squares in the center of the capital. The children of traders of Lebanese origin joined them.

Popular enthusiasm pushes enthusiasts to compete in increasingly larger spaces, such as the terrain known as “the polygon” at rue du Docteur Gippet. On September 22, 1912, these young players declared the “Society of Physical Culture and Football Association” in the prefecture. The new multi-sports club has several disciplines: fencing, football, basketball, athletics, volleyball, handball and pétanque.

Two physical education teachers, Bertola and Cresson, were at the origin of a new era for the club, in the 1960s. The first is on assignment, the second is a veteran of the club. They change training methods. Their action has two lasting repercussions, the orientation of players still in activity towards the training of technical executives. The effect is immediate. This is the start of a prosperous period in all categories, particularly among seniors. ASL le Sport will retain the title of champion of Guyana for seven consecutive years.

The club won the Guyana Division of Honor for the first time in 1964 and then distinguished itself by winning the title seven times in a row from 1966 to 1972. A record never equaled in the territory. They obtained two qualifications in the 7th round of the Coupe de with the professional team of as their opponent and a trip to Mantes-La-Ville in the region, the Antilles-Guyana champion trophy, two participations in the Champions Cup of Concacaf, the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Football.

1965, the club lost a Guyana Cup final against AJ Saint-Georges before winning it in 1987 and 1988. It was not until February 8, 1984 that the ASL was declared in the prefecture under the name ” Sports and Literary Association of Guyanese Sport”. Under the presidency of Michel Lafontaine, the ASL remained undefeated and without a single goal conceded in 10 matches in a row. He signs the best current series.

The Cayenne club stood out in the 1993 Concacaf Champions League. The Guyanese eliminated the Surinamese SV Leo Victor in the first round before losing to United Petrotrin, a club from Trinidad and Tobago.

The ASL has an average of 250 members divided into nine teams in all competitions organized by the League. Despite stagnation in Regional 2 in recent years, ASL Le Sport remains to this day one of the most successful in Guyana.
