The building is one of the creations of the Ticino architect, Livio Vacchini, whose work is recognized and published internationally. Inaugurated in 1996, the building is the first project in the new Rives-de-Meurthe district. Announcing the end of industrial wastelands, its construction symbolically inaugurated the realization of this vast Nancy urban project.

It has an architecture well integrated into its environment, accessible from a large square and the vegetated surroundings of the canal. It appears as a simple parallelepiped volume, monolithic, in white reinforced concrete. A place for research, debates and career paths for future professionals: designing an architecture school represents a challenge as much as an architect’s dream. Aware of the didactic role of such a building, Livio Vacchini infused it with his architectural vision, experience and culture, to invite students to live an architectural and educational experience.

A public building must, according to Vacchini, be “autonomous”. Its simple parallelepiped shape is a symbol of an inseparable whole. From the outside, the internal functions of the school do not appear, thus maintaining an enigmatic appearance. The notion of monumentality is precious for Vacchini, it joins that of “muralness” and consequently of opacity. The envelope has few visible openings: for Vacchini, the window belongs, in opposition to the wall, to domestic language. Numerous side windows are hidden behind “cilia” oriented at 45°. They direct the views and allow diffused light to penetrate which is reflected on the smooth concrete surface. Introverted, with an almost monastic atmosphere, the school goes against the grain of an era which advocates complete transparency. The rare views to the exterior frame the essential components of the landscape and the neighborhood. A full-height opening marks the centrality of the main facade towards the canal and the city in the background. While on the opposite facade, the ground floor is transformed into a window onto the busy street: it is the school’s turn to be observed.
