The floods and landslides that occurred on Friday in Valais caused significant material damage, particularly in the side valleys. Although no one was injured, more than 200 people were evacuated, according to authorities.

In total, 230 people had to be evacuated, mainly in Chippis, near Sierre, the head of the Cantonal Control Body (OCC), Marie-Claude Noth, told Keystone-ATS late Friday afternoon. Heart. And to specify that more than 200 firefighters and 20 civil protection personnel are engaged.

In the tributaries of the Rhône, the maximum flood levels were measured on Friday morning, Raphaël Mayoraz, head of the Valais Natural Hazards Service, told Keystone-ATS. The bad weather caused significant material damage which cannot yet be quantified.

Along the Rhône, the flood should reach its maximum on Friday evening, added Mr. Mayoraz. The risk of flooding is currently very high, but not as critical as during the last major floods in October 2000, when the dikes partially gave way and the Rhône flooded the plain in Lower Valais.

According to him, the current bad weather also has a particular constellation. The fact that almost all the tributaries of the Rhône are so swollen at the same time is quite exceptional.
