The Saint-Martin canal, the smallest of the Parisian canals, will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2025! Rediscover its shores, its history and its anecdotes aboard discovery cruises throughout the year.
In 2021, it was the Saint-Denis canal which celebrated its 200 ansbefore the Ourcq canal in 2022. 2025it's the turn of canal Saint-Martin to celebrate his bicentenarythrough various historical cruises and walks to discover it differently! The smallest of the Parisian canals, it was inaugurated on 4 November 1825 by Charles X, after sixteen years of work. A real point of interest and gathering place for the 10th and 11th arrondissements, it connects the Villette basin to the Arsenal port.
Long almost 4,5 kmwith a underground part of 1800 meters between Place de la République and Place de la Bastille, the Saint-Martin canal has nine locks. If freight traffic was relevant for a long time, today, only pleasure boats walk there for commented cruises. Since 2024, it has been integrated into Paris Plages and it is possible to swim there in the summer within a supervised area.
In 2025 and from now on, you will be able to board pleasant boats for walks on the waves, of varying length, but also enjoy guided walks around the heritage and the hidden side of the Saint-Martin canal. The opportunity to explore this immense aquatic avenue which crosses one end of the capital and offers very different landscapes from one end to the other, all the way to the Seine. Under the famous vaulted tunnel, you will hear many anecdotes, notably about the films that were filmed there, from Ratatouille has Mission Impossible !
