86,500 Reunion Islanders are treated for their diabetes. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, awareness-raising actions are being carried out this Thursday, November 14 to inform and detect those affected earlier.
There are proportionally twice as many diabetic patients treated in Reunion than at the national level. 38% of people over 65 are affected by diabetes. They are thus part of the 86,500 Reunion Islanders treated for their diabetes in 2022, or 14% of adults.
A number underestimated compared to the real situation, according to the Regional Health Agency, with some people not being diagnosed.
In 2023, 2,700 pregnant women were hospitalized with gestational diabetes, compared to 2,900 in 2022. On average, 2 in 10 pregnant women suffer from it.
In Reunion, 4% of diabetic patients present complications. 1,100 were dialyzed in 2023, 660 hospitalized for stroke in 2022 and 250 were hospitalized for lower limb amputation. On average, 260 deaths are directly due to diabetes each year.
So that situations do not degenerate, health authorities encourage early screening. This Thursday, November 14, on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, it is possible to get tested for free in pharmacies on the island.
Other actions are carried out in the department throughout the month in November. Find the program here.
The FindRiskpéï test allows you to assess diabetes risk in one minute. By answering an online questionnaire, a person can identify their risk factors.
Diet and the practice of a sporting activity are decisive in the management of diabetes. In particular, they help reduce the risk of complications. Awareness starts from a very young age, as in this school in La Montagne, in Saint-Denis.
