“Since the project plans to install major infrastructures visible from afar in several inhabited sectors of Mauricie, it is essential to ensure that they will not alter the cultural heritage landscapes,” estimates Éric Lord, general director of Culture Mauricie.

“In this context, studies to evaluate the sites targeted by the project must be carried out,” he continued in a press release.

The organization expressed its concerns and concerns during the consultation conducted by the Ministry of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks.

Creating a significant feeling of attachment among the population, cultural and heritage landscapes are also major sources of economic benefits, notes Culture Mauricie.

“The economic and social value of the landscapes of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean is estimated at $158 to $351 billion, according to a study commissioned by Tourisme Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean,” cites Culture Mauricie as an example.

“The quality of the landscape is a determining motivation for tourists to visit a region. The view of the agricultural landscape can enhance the value of single-family residential properties. Landscapes also have an impact on the migration of city dwellers to rural areas.”

Culture Mauricie also recalls that measures to preserve cultural and heritage landscapes have been included since 2012 in the Quebec law on the cultural heritage of Quebec.
