In this small village in Eure, we collect paper to finance school activities

HAS school of Douains (Eure), which also welcomes children from the villages of La Heunière, Saint-Vincent-des-Bois and Mercey, we usually carry out one or two paper collections every year. The money raised through this operation makes it possible to finance student projects.

“A few years ago, there was one or two collections per year, in September and June, with sheets, newspapers, books, advertising. The children know that leaves are not put in the trash, but in the leaf collector,” explains Stéphanie, a student’s mother.

Objective: 4 to 5 tonnes or more

The Paprec company’s dumpster is present from Monday to Saturday morning, and an office is set up with parent volunteers to help other parents or village residents who come to bring their collection.

“We hope to collect between 4 and 5 tonnes of paper. This brings us approximately €40 per ton“, adds Stéphanie, another mother of a student.

“The school has a ecological approach which aims to educate children about recovery. We no longer have big skips because there are a lot of adverts on mailboxes now. At the beginning, some people sorted paper and carried many more papers than now. At school, it has become a well-established habit,” notes Christophe, a father of a student.

Land made available by farmers

The land to install the skip is made available to the project by a farmer from Saint-Vincent-des-Bois. A good half of the families participate. We will have to wait until mid-June for the dumpster to be collected and weighed to know what it brings to the school for future projects.

This operation, beyond bringing in a significant amount for the school, teaches children to sort the waste. It’s a real ecological approach!
