Addis Ababa – Morocco reiterated, Tuesday in Addis Ababa before the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), its support for an inclusive political process in Libya.

The Ambassador Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the AU and the UNECA, Mohamed Arrouchi, who spoke at a meeting of the AU PSC, underlined that, for Morocco, the political solution and the dialogue between the various Libyan actors are the only means of getting out of the crisis that the country has been going through for years.

He affirmed that the issues raised on the Libyan scene can only be resolved through presidential and legislative elections which would lead to the establishment of credible institutions, recalling that the Kingdom played an essential role in ending the political conflict and improving the humanitarian and economic situation in Libya, as well as supporting Libyan state institutions to control the security situation and fight against terrorism and organized crime, notably by welcoming the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015.

The meetings organized by Morocco between the Libyan parties are part of the Kingdom’s sincere efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully and without foreign interference, he said.

The Moroccan diplomat noted that the Kingdom, which collaborates with all Libyan institutions with respect and credibility, will continue its efforts to bring together the points of view of the Libyan parties by welcoming Libyan actors and officials, while supporting the efforts of the UN mission on this level, in order to preserve the sovereignty of Libyan territory and restore security and stability in this brotherly Maghreb country as quickly as possible.

Morocco is aware that the multiplication of foreign interference in the Libyan issue and divergent international agendas have a negative impact on the resolution of the Libyan crisis, accentuate internal divisions and compromise any peaceful political process, while Libya needs a true reconciliation between all parties and participatory work in which all Libyans would contribute to the building and strengthening of state institutions, he insisted.

Mr. Arrouchi also underlined that the conditions are currently met in Libya to make progress in the political process, noting that resolving the question of legitimacy can only happen through a transparent and inclusive electoral process.

The ambassador noted that it is imperative to find a solution to the Libyan crisis, because it has an impact on the security and stability of North Africa and the Sahel region.
