The images posted on social networks are impressive. A tornado struck the town of Carlepont, in Oise near Noyon this Tuesday afternoon. Rescue operations began around 5:15 p.m., Oise firefighters told France Bleu Picardie.

According to an initial assessment, 34 houses are affected. A 300m² building of a farmhouse collapsed, it was empty of any occupants: 150m² are on the ground. A high voltage line was also torn, which could have an impact on “two neighboring towns”, specifies the same source. The damage is mainly torn tiles and iron sheets.

The mayor launches steps to have the town classified as a disaster area

The sub-prefect of Compiègne and the mayor of Carlepont visited the site. In total, 40 firefighters from the Oise SDIS were involved in the operation, including agents specializing in intervention in dangerous environments and a drone. In a message posted on Facebook, the town hall mentions “a lot of material damage. Elected officials and municipal agents, firefighters, secure the premises as much as possible.”

The municipality gives some instructions in the event of damage. “Take photos of anything damaged. – Contact your insurance and ask if you can temporarily put back some tiles or other items.“The mayor of Carlepont is taking steps to have the town classified as a disaster area.
