“The next summit on peace in Ukraine will not take place in Europe,” the head of the Swiss delegation declared on Monday in the Bürgenstock conference, Ambassador Gabriel Lüchinger. A possible host would be Saudi Arabia.

Interested countries must themselves take steps for a future conference on the Ukrainian conflict. This is not Switzerland’s responsibility, Mr. Lüchinger stressed on German-speaking radio SRF. THE Bürgenstock was the ideal place to initiate the process. From now on, Switzerland will act behind the scenes at the request of key states.

As the reactions of many delegations showed, all participants were enthusiastic about the view of the montages, the weather and the atmosphere. For the President of the Confederation Viola Amherd and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis, this conference was a good opportunity to hold meetings at the highest level and to continue to develop their network for Switzerland.

Few risks taken

The ambassador considers the signing of the final declaration by 84 states a great success. Until now, Switzerland had hardly taken a risk as big as this conference, but it paid off. “The most important thing is that with this declaration we have in our hands something that we can continue to develop.”

The diplomat indicated that some states withdrew from the declaration. Others were added. He did not specify which countries this actually concerns.

Integrate Russia

Gabriel Lüchinger was disappointed with China’s refusal to participate. He points out that he personally met the Chinese special envoy for Ukraine and Russia several times before the conference. The discussions were good and China showed keen interest in the peace process. This important dialogue with Beijing will now continue.

Russia must also now be able to be integrated in one way or another, the ambassador adds. Of many countries present at the Bürgenstock have very good relations with Russia and are keen to use their contacts.
