Faux-la-Montagne in Creuse wants a one-euro canteen with organic and local products

In Faux-la-Montagne, the canteen is sacred! Corinne Romanet, at the helm for 18 years behind the stove, makes it a point of honor to cook organic and local products with his colleague Alexis. While a large pot of pumpkin soup simmers on the fire, they peel and cut apples for compote, for dessert. Without compromising on homemade, the municipality wants to lower the price of meals for schoolchildren.

Currently, the canteen costs 2.80 euros per meal per child. Faux-la-Montagne will apply for benefit from the “one euro canteen” systemfinanced by the State. In Creuse, 28 communities have already taken the plunge according to the prefecture, such as La Courtine.

A price according to parents' income

In reality, the price will not be one euro for everyone: the price will vary according to the family quotient. There will be four levels: 50 cents per meal for the most modest, then 1 euro, 1.50 euros and finally 2.80 euros for the wealthiest families. According to the town hall, with this device, the meal will be cheaper for at least half of the 60 children who eat in the canteen.

The mayor of Faux, Catherine Moulin, hopes that this reduction in prices will apply early 2025. This will not weigh on the budget: “The State gives three to four euros per child and per meal, for increments of one euro and below.”

The measure will be another argument for the attractiveness of the municipality. Faux-la-Montagne is almost an exception in Creuse : it attracts young couples with children. A fourth class even opened this year at the school.
