As temperatures soar, three tourists found dead and several missing in Greece

HEAT WAVE – This is the earliest heat wave ever recorded in Greece. With temperatures already surpassing 40 degrees in some towns, primary schools have been closed and the country faces a high fire risk.

A weather that brings its share of dangers, sometimes poorly understood by tourists. In one week, this heatwave had a dramatic toll: three foreign travelers were found dead, and two French women were reported missing.

A dangerous week for hikers

On June 9 on the island of Symi, in the Aegean Sea, British television star doctor Michael Mosley was found dead at the age of 67, after having been reported missing during a walk. Saturday June 15, on the island of Samos, the body of a Dutch tourist was spotted by a firefighter drone in a ravine. The 74-year-old was last seen the previous Sunday, walking with difficulty. The next day, on the island of Cordou, the body of a 55-year-old American was discovered at sea near the port of Mathraki. Present for his vacation, he was last seen a few days earlier by residents in a cafe. His body must be autopsied.

A particularly dangerous week for tourists and hikers. According to Greek media, searches to find other foreign tourists are underway. Among them, two French women aged 73 and 64 went missing on Sikinos, a small island in the Cyclades.

According to AFP, most of the missing tourists had gone hiking in the scorching heat of last week.
