A new step in the opening up from Fleury-Mérogis (Essonne). Without an RER station or tram station, the town inaugurated on June 7, 2024, with the Department, the new cycle path, along the RD 445 which connects rue de l’Essonne to the roundabout shared with the RD 310.

“Particular importance”

“This piece of cycle path is of particular importance, because the RD 445 is a major road between the A6 motorway and the N104, or even national road 7, frequented every day by around 40,000 vehicles”, rejoices Olivier Corzani, the mayor of Fleury-Mérogis.

“Beyond territorial planning, it is also new mobility practices that we must work from a very young age,” adds the elected official in front of the twenty CM1 students from the Robert Desnos school group who were taking part in an introduction to cycling in the city.

Three meters wide, the cycle path, combined with the pedestrian path next to it, covers a length of 570 m and completes the 150 m already developed by the Department a little further around the roundabout between the RD 445 and the RD 296.

An innovative process deployed for the first time in France

The cycle path developed in Fleury-Mérogis was created using an innovative process. Under the coated layer, a slab made of plastic boxes (photo) allows rainwater to drain away while allowing gas exchange, which is important for the trees along the main road.
Although this technology has been used for more than 20 years in the Netherlands, it is being deployed for the first time in France.
“We create a foundation layer without excavation, without having to compact the soil. This allows us to maintain a natural environment for the roots, in particular so that they can develop in the long term,” indicates Richard Faleschini, representative of Permavoïd , the company that designed these tiles.
“If the technical teams believe that this process works, we could aim to generalize it,” specifies François Durovray, the president of the Department.

“It’s a very good thing, because this place was one of the black spots in the sector”estimates Benoit Carrouée who until then drove on the road when he took the departmental road.

“To be complete, it missing 1 km to reach the T12 station by crossing the Grande Borne and on the other side a path which would allow you to go to Brétigny-sur-Orge,” adds the member of the Federation for Soft Traffic in Essonne (FCDE).

As an extension of the cycle path inaugurated by the Department, Cœur d’Essonne agglomeration should soon mark the roadway for cycles over 500 meters to reach the RD 445 and RD 296 roundabout.

The RD 445 will be served by one of the future express coach lines

Good news never comes alone, the town of Fleury-Mérogis should welcome an express bus line in the coming months. As it happens, the one which will connect Sainte-Geneviève-des-bois to Orly airport and therefore stopped on the RD 445.

“If the road remains the major support for mobility, it is necessary to develop cycle paths and public transport in order to put more people in fewer vehicles,” assures François Durovray, president of the Department of Essonne and author of a detailed report on the opportunity to create these new express coach lines in Île-de-France.
