Lyon ring road, the metropolis is building a noise barrier in Bron-Parilly

From June 17 to the end of September 2024, the Metropolis of Lyon is undertaking the construction of an anti-noise wall to reduce noise pollution along the Laurent Bonnevay ring road, near La Boutasse, in the Bron-Parilly sector. This area is one of the most affected by noise in the metropolis, seriously affecting the quality of life of local residents.

Fight against noise pollution: the Métropole de Lyon is committed
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), prolonged or excessive exposure to noise can have various negative effects on health, including stress, problems sleeping, concentration, learning, and even impaired long-term cardiovascular health.
As part of the European directive on the assessment and management of environmental noise, the Metropolis of Lyon has mapped the noise on its territory, the basis of the Environmental Noise Prevention Plan 2021-2024. This plan aims to protect sensitive populations and establishments, prevent further noise pollution and preserve quiet areas.
To support its actions, the Metropolis collaborates with the Acoucité association, an observatory of the sound environment created nearly 25 years ago, demonstrating a continuing commitment to a healthier and quieter living environment.

This project, which will last three and a half months, will require the closure of exit 11b of the ring road from June 20 at 8 p.m. Motorists will be redirected via variable message signs.

Protecting populations from noise pollution
The operation consists of erecting an acoustic screen along the Laurent Bonnevay ring road and Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, near Gate 11 (Porte du Vinatier). This sector has 12 traffic lanes, generating high noise levels.
The green wall, with a height of 6 meters and a total length of 312 meters, will protect 78 housing units, mainly social housing managed by Lyon Métropole Habitat, as well as public spaces and a children’s play area. The objective is to reduce the noise level from the current 71-78 dB to 65 dB, thus responding to an urgent need to reduce nuisances.
Technical characteristics of the acoustic screen
The acoustic protection will be available in two distinct parts, made from absorbent wood concrete panels: a first screen 204 meters long, positioned along exit ramp 11b, extending an existing screen and a second screen 108 meters long. length, placed along the ring road at the top of the embankment.
The panels will be fixed in metal posts, themselves anchored on concrete blocks and concrete piles. This method was chosen to minimize disruption to local residents during the construction phase.
Works and traffic information
The work, lasting from June 17 to the end of September 2024, involves the closure of exit ramp 11b from June 20 at 8 p.m. Users wishing to reach the center of Bron will have to take rue de Reims via exit 11a.
Motorists will be informed of the closure through variable message signs and various communication channels from the Metropolis and the Mobility Agency, including email and SMS alerts, as well as updates on their websites. A public meeting and the distribution of flyers were organized to inform local residents.
Vegetation of the structure and its surroundings
In the fall, after the wall has been installed, it will be planted with climbing plants and a mixture of plant species promoting biodiversity. Existing vegetation will be preserved as much as possible for better landscape integration. Nest boxes will also be installed for birds and bats.
The project also provides for the replanting and densification of the green space between the ring road and homes, thus creating a visual filter and a local ecological corridor. A total of 17 baliveaux, 183 climbing plants and 370 perennial plants will be planted, favoring local species.
Cost and financing
The total cost of the project amounts to 1.4 million euros excluding tax, entirely covered by the Métropole de Lyon.
