France recovers a medal dating from the 1900 Paris Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) reallocated to France a silver medal in cycling dating back to the second edition of the modern Games, in 1900 in Paris, initially awarded to Great Britain.

Meeting Thursday June 13 in Lausanne (Switzerland), the executive commission of the body “agreed to rectify its records” to carry “to the assets of France” the 2e Lloyd Hildebrand’s place in the men’s 25 km on the track, announced IOC spokesperson Mark Adams. “As was the rule at the time, athletes only had to send their license number established by the national federation for which they regularly competed and pay the registration fee”he explained.

Gold, “recent research has concluded that although Lloyd Hildebrand was a British citizen, he was born and raised on French soil, and had competed for a French club before and after the Paris Games -1900. Based on this new information, the Executive Board has decided to apply the same policy as in previous cases brought to the attention of the IOC. This consists of placing the medal in the assets of the national Olympic committee of the territory in which the club which registered the athlete was based.
