Package theft: two suspects arrested in Le Plateau-Mont-Royal

A man and a woman were arrested Tuesday in possession of items they allegedly stole from a residential building on Le Plateau-Mont-Royal, in Montreal.

The two individuals, a man and a woman aged 32 and 29 respectively, were apprehended by the police while they were trying to flee on foot, the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) said on Thursday. by press release.

The suspects allegedly stole postal packages from a building on rue Saint-Grégoire. A person residing in the area had reported their report to 911 shortly before due to their suspicious behavior.

Some of the packages found in the suspects’ possession were still in their packaging with the postal label and could therefore be returned to their owners.

The two suspects appeared at the Montreal courthouse on Wednesday to answer charges of theft and receiving stolen property under $5,000. They were then released on conditions until the next stage of legal proceedings.

“The Northern Regional Investigation Section has reason to believe that the duo could be responsible for a series of break-ins that have recently occurred in the area,” he said.

Anyone with information that could advance the investigation is asked to contact 911 or their local station. It is also possible to communicate anonymously and confidentially with Info-Crime Montréal at 514 393‐1133 or via the reporting form available on the infocrimemontreal.ca website.

Some tips to avoid package theft

  • Opt for delivery with signature so that your package is not left at your door;
  • Ask the delivery person to place your package in a trunk or bin with a padlock;
  • Ask a trusted person to pick up your package in your absence or have it delivered to their home;
  • Evaluate the possibility of installing a surveillance camera and, if it is already done, ensure that it is working properly.
