Approved trapper, falconer… The town of Saint-Saëns in Seine-Maritimestruggles to get rid of the pigeons that have taken up residence in the city. But she does not despair and tries a new technique: the sterilization of “dominant” pigeons.

A feed trough was installed in the commune, serving corn kernels, coated with an antiparasitic agent having a contraceptive effect.

It must be said that in the city center, there are a lot of pigeons. On the roofs of houses and buildings, in the church tower, on the edges of the stained glass windows…

It's awful, they nestle everywhere and you have to see the damage it causes.

Indeed, pigeon droppings being very acidic, they can damage building materials such as stone, concrete, brick and metal.

“We often have comments from customers regarding excrement on the sidewalk,” says Maryvonne, owner of the bakery on rue du Général de Gaulle, before adding: “I also wait before having my blind cleaned, that has a cost.” and if I have to start again every three months it's not possible. »

The inhabitants want to believe it

Beyond the material damage, it is the well-being of residents and traders which is impacted.

To limit comments from customers, Maryvonne sweeps her sidewalk every morning. “We can't kill them so it's complicated to find a viable solution. But I hope the results will be convincing,” she says.

The manager of Maintenon is a little more skeptical: “The 500 already present will still be there! But let's see what this will give. »

But for Joël and Jessica, two residents of the town, there is perhaps a little hope. “We don’t live in the center so we suffer a little less,” explains Jessica.

If we could stop getting shit on ourselves every time we walk in the city center that would be better!

In any case, local residents are waiting to see the results, and hope, at the same time, that this will bring the swallows back.
