Both candidates were considered. They are now filed. Radical liberals Sonia Tauss-Cornut and Stéphane Ganzer are seeking to succeed Frédéric Favre at the Valais Council of State. The latter announced a few days ago that he was giving up a third mandate to lead Switzerland’s bid for the 2038 Winter Olympics. With this decision, he surprised many observers, and especially his own party. Both candidates had very little time to make their decision. Both are 49 years old and have never hidden their government ambitions.
Accountant and head of the group at the Grand Conseil, Chablaisienne Sonia Tauss-Cornut served for twelve years on the municipal executive of Port-Valais. Member of Parliament and president of the commune of Noble-Contrée, in the Sierre region, Stéphane Ganzer is also a history teacher. In Valais, the PLR is suffering. Between the federal elections of 2011 and those of 2023, he lost four points, going from 18.8 to 14.7% of voters. During last month’s municipal elections, it lost 15 seats in French-speaking Valais.
