Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Monday that King Philippe had accepted his resignation, stressing that he bore responsibility for the result of the elections to the European Parliament, considered “disappointing”.
De Croo wrote, in a post on his account on the “X” platform, “The king has accepted my resignation, and the government will manage current affairs and prepare the transition to a new team.”
The resignation of Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo comes after the defeat of his party, the Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Open Vld), in the European elections, with 5.6%, while the right-wing New Flemish Alliance party obtained the majority .
De Croo added, thanking his voters: “The election result was disappointing and I bear responsibility for that.”
Far-right parties made significant progress in the European Parliament elections yesterday, Sunday, rising to the top positions, notably in France, Italy and Austria, according to preliminary results and polls.
