After a few months of respite, an increase in the price of gas is announced for the month of July, and it is not the least. The French will see the price of gas increase by 11.7% on July 1, 2024.

According to the energy police, the annual invoice including tax of a residential customer in offer indexed to this benchmark price », stands at 1,184 euros at July prices, compared to 1,060 euros per year in June, and 1,227 euros in January. This price then remains lower than in January, but is up 124 euros compared to June.

This increase is explained by the entry into force, in July 2024, of new pricing for the maintenance of the natural gas distribution networks of GRDF (Gaz Réseau Distribution France). Even if gas consumption in France is decreasing, the distribution networks remain and still require maintenance. This increase forms a paradox as gas prices oscillate at levels ten times lower than the peak of the energy crisis in summer 2022.

“Bringing competition into play”.

For several weeks, certain suppliers such as EDF and Engie have informed their customers that they were going to “pass on the increase to their bills”. TotalEnergies has specified for its part that it will pass it on to “indexed offers, but not to those with a fixed price”. This increase is a massive blow to the purchasing power of gas consumers. In this context, Emmanuelle Wargon, the president of the Commission for Energy Regulation (CRE) advised consumers “to bring competition into play”.
