Another strong increase. The security services recorded 271,000 victims of domestic violence in 2023, a figure up 10% compared to the previous year, according to figures published Wednesday November 6 by the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security (SSMSI). According to the data, 64% of domestic violence is physical violence, 31% is verbal or psychological violence and 4% is sexual violence. In 2022, the figure was up 15% year-on-year.

The Interior Ministry writes that, as in 2022, “Pas-de-, Réunion, , and Seine-Saint-Denis are among the departments with the highest rates of victims recorded per 1,000 inhabitants” aged 15 to 64.

“In a context of freedom of speech and improvement in the reception conditions for victims by the police and gendarmerie services, the number of registered victims has doubled since 2016”notes the SSMSI.

Collecting the words of victims is not only done in police stations and gendarmes. Since October 2023, Ile-de- hospitals have offered the possibility of filing a complaint on site, without having to go to the police station. “The idea is that emergencies are seen as a place that can provide solutions”welcomed a nurse to franceinfo.
