A terrible road tragedy took place this Tuesday June 18, 2024 shortly before 7 p.m. on the RD921 at Bailleau-le-Pin (Eure-et-Loir) at the place called Montançon, near Chartres.

The impact was extremely violent and one of the cars burst into flames. Seven people lost their lives in this pileup. The prefect of Eure-et-Loir, Hervé Jonathan, provides some initial elements to understand this tragedy.

A frontal impact before catching fire

The road accident occurred on this RD 921, at 6:20 p.m. A very busy road, “a very busy axis with 10,000 vehicles per day” indicated Mayor Martial Lochon to our colleagues at France info. A road limited to 90 km/h bordered by embankments.

A vehicle coming from Illiers-Combray collided head-on with two vehicles coming from Bailleau-le-Pin, before catching fire.

The emergency services dispatched in large numbers to the site – forty-three firefighters from the centers of Bailleau-le-Pin, Illiers-Combray, Lucé or Chartres – observed nine victims.

One seriously injured and one slightly injured, a young couple in the third car, were transported to the Chartres hospital center.

Seven people died

The first two people to die were a couple aged 80 and 85 whose car was hit.

Five of the deceased victims were in the first vehicle, they were between 17 and 19 years old.

The rescue and security services, firefighters, Samu, agents of the Departmental Roads Directorate and gendarmes “were mobilized to take care of the victims and ensure the safety of road users,” notes the prefect.

A diversion was put in place to secure the accident area and facilitate rescue operations.

The prefect wishes to “ express support to the families and the injured » and thanks the rescue teams “for their rapid and efficient intervention”.

The mayor, for his part, said he received “ devastated families that we try to support » as reported France Info.
