Saccording to an INSEE study, in , immigrants had an average annual standard of living of 21,570 euros in 2021, compared to 27,170 euros for the non-immigrant population, or 26% less. After payment of social benefits and payment of taxes, this gap is reduced to 21%. Immigrants from Africa have the lowest average standard of living: 18,990 euros per year, compared to 24,680 euros for immigrants born in Europe.

On average younger, less qualified and occupying less qualified jobs, immigrants have lower labor income: 16,160 euros, compared to 20,600 euros for non-immigrants. This labor income represents 75% of the standard of living of immigrants, the same proportion as for non-immigrants (76%).

More social benefits, fewer retirement pensions

On the other hand, the share of social benefits (excluding pensions, pensions and unemployment benefits) is on average higher among immigrants: 11%, compared to 6% for non-immigrants. It reaches 16% for immigrants born in Africa, who more often belong to large families: 22% live in families with at least three children, compared to 14% of non-immigrants.

Conversely, pensions represent only 18% of immigrants' standard of living, compared to 24% for non-immigrants. They are 12% for immigrants born in Africa, compared to 29% for those born in Europe, who are 6.6 years older on average.

Finally, immigrants are more exposed to poverty: their poverty rate reaches 30.6%, and even 35.9% among immigrants from Africa, compared to 12.7% among non-immigrants. If immigrants constitute 10% of the French population, they represent 21% of poor people.
