A veritable wall of fog has fallen over Rennes for several days. Morning, noon or evening… the decor doesn't change much. Enough to create a slightly gloomy atmosphere in the Breton capital.
“Fed up with this time,” said a resident on X (formerly Twitter). But if the people of Rennes are desperately waiting for the sun to return, we will still have to be patient.
How to explain this persistent fog?
“We are in a situation of anticyclonic blocking, with high pressures which suppress the humidity at ground level,” explains Sébastien Décaux, forecaster at Météo Bretagne. This high humidity is linked to the heavy rainfall of past weeks but also to the passage of a sea current coming from the Atlantic Ocean.
“The anticyclone acts like a bell which will block the sun's rays,” continues the meteorologist. “When there is no wind to stir the air, the situation can remain frozen for a long time.”
Not the slightest ray of sunshine since the beginning of November
Due to this phenomenon, the sun has not yet shined once in Rennes since the beginning of November. The situation is worse on the side of the Nantes neighbor who has not been able to appreciate the slightest ray for a whole week already.
“It’s a fairly rare situation,” confides Sébastien Decaux. “In Rennes, the gray and low clouds will remain present for a while as long as no disturbances appear. We should not see the slightest change between now and Friday, but there is hope of improvement for Saturday.”
