In Lorraine, the village of Olley (Meurthe-et-Moselle) has existed for almost 1,000 years and yet the inhabitants have never had an official name.
After a consultation with the 230 citizens and a vote, it has now been done since Saturday November 2, 2024. And their new name is original: Burnt Asses.
The popular nickname “Burnt Ass”
Among the inhabitants of Olley, 89 people participated in the vote open from 10 years old. If eight names were proposed, the choice of “Burned Culs” was widely accepted. “ There were 42 votes out of 89 for “Burned Ass”. The second choice, “Olleysien”, only received 25 votes,” indicates David Buono, mayor of the town.
According to him, this result is not a real surprise: “ Les Culs brûlés is the nickname that the inhabitants have had for several generations. He doesn't bother us, we're proud of him so I expected him to come in the first two places.”
From now on, the souls of this Lorraine commune have an official name that is out of the ordinary. “This doesn’t change anything administratively but it allows the village and residents to unite around a common name. And with a name like that, it has the merit of getting people talking about Olley,” smiles Mr. Buono.
