Langres and the pilgrimage routes

Tourism. Raymond Guillot, guide for the Haute-Marne Attractiveness Agency, offers a new visit to the heart of the city, this Saturday June 8 at 3 p.m. After dealing with the theme of stained glass, the guide will walk through the religious district, to discuss the theme of “Langres, crossroads of the roads of Santiago de Compostela and the Via Francigena”.

While walkers from all over Europe pass through the city every day, for centuries the territory of Haute-Marne has been crossed by pilgrimage routes. “From Poland and Northern Europe, we were already heading towards Santiago de Compostela in Spain. From the South of England, the Via Francigena led to Rome and Jerusalem. The travelers stopped at Langres, where at the cathedral they meditated in front of the authentic relics of Saint-Mammès. It is this theme of pilgrimages that Saturday’s visit will evoke. She will go to the media library to look at documents, to the parish presbytery where a stopover lodge is set up, then to the cathedral, the mother church of the diocese, for a visit to the treasure and the sacristy.

In front of the reliquary of Saint-Mammès, the guide will discuss the question of whether the relics of Saint Mammès are authentic or not. Because from the start of construction on the cathedral, the possession of these constituted a lever of power for the bishops of Langres. To find out everything about the practical side, a member of the Compostela association, responsible for the section from Langres to Cluny, will answer questions from the public. Path markings, pilgrim’s kit, credencial… You will learn how to get started on the paths too!

Departure of the visit at 3 p.m. at the Tourist Office. Booking is recommended.
