It is not in the heart of the city center, but it has a very special position to Mende (Lozere). Place du Général-de-Gaulle is located at the eastern exit of what locals sometimes jokingly call the “periphery” or “the ring road”, or even the “ring”. This is the route taken by the RN88 linking Toulouse to Lyon when it passes through the prefecture. Thousands of motorists pass there every day.
A place which is located at a crossroads and through which almost all vehicles crossing Mende pass on their way to Rodez or Puy-en-Velay. And it will change a lot.
The project for its redevelopment was presented during the municipal council of October 24, 2024. The principle was adopted “following the studies which were carried out by the City services with a team of landscapers and architects, and after the exchanges that took place with the Mendoise population and residents of the square during public meetings,” specifies the town hall.
A real square
Who is closely interested in it since it is… on the square! It even frames it since two facades of this “triangle” are occupied by municipal buildings (the town hall and its annex, not to mention the headquarters of the community of communes).
The ultimate goal is to “modernize the heart of the city” and “optimize its traffic plan,” assures the City.
Always enough to park
In particular by enlarging the square in front of the annexed town hall and the spaces in front of the shops, by creating access for people with reduced mobility around the square, by beautifying the green spaces, by de-waterproofing the floors by securing the paths “by the removal of the road passing in front of the town hall annexin order to promote soft mobility with more spaces dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists”… While maintaining parking spaces at the bottom of the square.
But in the short term, the biggest change for users will be making the upper part of Allée Piencourt one-way. It will have in order to create wider sidewalks and cycle facilities on it.
This work should begin from spring 2025.
