It was a very special package. On May 30, the Côte-d’Or gendarmerie indicated that they had intervened for a particular operation: a living tarantula was found in a package. It was an agent from one of the department’s post offices who made the improbable discovery.

A vulnerable species

This tarantula brachypelma hamorii, also known as the orange-kneed tarantula, was found “a few weeks ago”. Classified as a vulnerable speciesits possession is prohibited in the absence of a special permit, recalls France Bleu Bourgogne.

A few weeks ago, soldiers from the Environment Department of the Côte-d’Or gendarmerie were contacted by a post office in the department… Carefully packaged in a box, a somewhat special host awaited them at the inside…: a live tarantula brachypelma hamorii.

An open investigation

An investigation has been opened and entrusted to the environment unit of the gendarmerie, made up of 32 soldiers. The tarantula was kept as living piece of evidence and entrusted to a specialist.

As a reminder, the possession of protected animals of this type is considered an offense punishable by three years of imprisonment and a fine of 150,000 euros.
