MONTREAL — After locating the vehicle submerged in the waters of the Rivière des Prairies, in Montreal, the Montreal Police Service did not find its driver on Sunday.

It was a call to 911 on Sunday morning, around 4:50 a.m., which alerted the emergency services. The vehicle plunged into the river where St-Hubert Street ends, after crossing Park Stanley Avenue in Maurice-Richard Park, in the Ahuntsic district.

“The vehicle is completely submerged. According to witnesses, a man was observed in the water near the vehicle in question,” indicated agent Véronique Dubuc, spokesperson for the SPVM.

Divers from the SPVM Tactical Intervention Group (GTI) were on the scene early Sunday afternoon to carry out underwater checks and try to find the driver. Teams from the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM) and the Canadian Coast Guard were also called in for reinforcements.

“No one was located in the vehicle or in the surrounding area,” reported agent Jean-Pierre Brabant, spokesperson for the SPVM, late Sunday afternoon.

“The searches that were carried out on the banks near Montreal as well as Laval (…) yielded nothing,” he specifies.

The submerged vehicle was extricated and towed. It will be assessed over the next few hours.

The SPVM ended the operation, but the investigation continues to try to understand the circumstances that led the vehicle to be plunged into the waters of the Rivière des Prairies
