historical update on the hairy people of Tarn-et-Garonne treated on the Côte d’Azur

Friday June 14, 2024, the archives of Tarn-et-Garonne will offer a conference on the poilus wounded during the Great War, then sent to temporary hospitals on the Côte d’Azur. The public will therefore be able to discover the little-known story of these soldiers cared for under the palm trees.

It’s a little-known part of history… And yet, many Tarn-et-Garonnais poilus, wounded during the fighting of the Great War, were sent to temporary hospitals established on the Côte d’Azur. Particularly in Cannes and its palaces. Montalbanais will be able to learn more about these soldiers treated on the shores of the Mediterranean. Indeed, Friday June 14, 2024 at 6 p.m., the departmental archives will offer a 9th edition of “Friday Chats”.

Temporary hospital registers finally used

To tell this historical story, the public will be able to count on Yves Kinossian, director of the Alpes-Maritimes archives. By exploiting the registers of temporary hospitals, little-exploited sources, additional information was able to be unearthed on the Great War. The specialist will therefore be able to retrace the journey of some soldiers.

“These new sources show that for the Alpes-Maritimes alone, 140 temporary hospitals welcomed at least 178,000 wounded or sick soldiers. We also learn that in Cannes, more than fifty Tarn-et-Garonnais people were treated in this type of establishment,” adds the Tarn-et-Garonnaise institution. The audience will therefore be told the story of these men who went from orchards to battlefields then to palm trees Reservations required.
