Wild boar damage in Dordogne: “A good wild boar is a dead wild boar!” Farmers on the verge of a nervous breakdown

This new planting season is particularly problematic this year for many farmers in Dordogne due to climatic conditions (soggy soils) and especially the explosion of damage from large game with wild boar at the top of the list. Although measures have been taken, including the authorization of trapping all year round in around a hundred municipalities in the department or the possibility of carrying out hunts in April and May, these do not seem sufficient in the eyes of many stakeholders. of the agricultural world.

In order to assess the situation, last Thursday, Mr. Jean-Sébastien Lamontagne, prefect of Dordogne visited, at the invitation of the FDSEA (departmental federation of agricultural operators’ unions) and the chamber of agriculture, on a farm in Dussac, near Nontron, in the north-east of the department, where he met the farmers, two brothers, who told him of their difficulties and showed him the recent damage to their corn seedlings : Around ten hectares ravaged in 3 days!

The vice-president of the Dordogne Chamber of Agriculture, Yannick Francès, thus, on this occasion, sounded the alarm to our colleagues from France Bleu, invited to follow the prefectural visit: “ We are in a situation that is explosive in the department, the damage is having repercussions on the farms and we are in a rotten climate context, we are unable to establish our crops and the only ones that we can manage to implement. place are almost all destroyed by wild boars.[…]for us a good wild boar is a dead wild boar, today we are there“. Also, farmers expect a lot from hunters who have harvested no less than 20,000 swine this season!

Regarding the possibility of carrying out collective hunts for crop protection during the months of April and May, the prefect regretted that only 550 hunting companies, out of the 1,600 in the department, had made requests for authorization. in this framework. Obviously the proliferation of wild boar in Périgord is reaching a critical threshold and hunters are particularly in demand, both in terms of harvesting and from a financial point of view, which had already started to create a storm among certain nemrods. as we told you a few weeks ago.
