The Kingdom of Morocco, in partnership with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), will host, from October 22 to 24, 2024 in Rabat, the very first large-scale International Conference devoted to the role of artificial intelligence ( IA) in the advancement of the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), announces the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad.

This event, which will be co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and the Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Mr. Fernando Arias, will bring together more than 140 foreign participants, including representatives of more than 40 States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, as well as international experts from the fields of science, industry, and technology. civil society and academia.

The Conference will provide a platform for discussion to examine the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in the context of disarmament and chemical security.

This conference illustrates the Kingdom of Morocco’s commitment to promoting international peace and security through the responsible use of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, in crucial areas such as chemical security and non-proliferation.

Over three days, participants will have the opportunity to explore varied themes such as applications of AI in chemistry, challenges related to the ethical governance of AI, and its role in the fight against chemical terrorism .

Morocco has established itself as a major player in AI governance at the international level. The first African and Arab country to implement the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, the Kingdom also co-sponsored the first UN resolutions on AI and launched, in partnership with States -United, the “Group of Friends of Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development”.

This group aims to mobilize efforts to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where AI, combined with chemistry, could play a key role.

Created in 1997 to implement the Chemical Weapons Convention, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons works for a world free of chemical weapons. With 193 member states, the OPCW received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013 for its exceptional efforts in disarmament. Today, the OPCW continues to play a central role in preventing the re-emergence of chemical weapons and promoting the peaceful use of chemistry.
