An industrial mechanic lost his life after an accident on a construction site at the Recyclage Carbone Varennes factory on Friday morning.

The worker was near a forklift carrying a load at the time of the accident, according to a reliable source who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
The belt that held the load then gave way. The charge hit the worker head-on, throwing him a significant distance. Resuscitation maneuvers were attempted, but he was pronounced dead on the scene, again according to our sources.
“We have unfortunately received confirmation that a worker from one of the construction companies on the site of our factory has lost his life,” Recyclage Carbone Varennes responded by email.
An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the accident, according to the company.
Recyclage Carbone Varennes closed its entire site on Friday and will also close it on Monday. “We have ensured that psychological support is offered to workers on site,” added the company.
Recyclage Carbone Varennes, whose facilities are currently under construction, must become the first biomethanol production plant in Quebec when it opens in 2026.
No less than 68 construction workers lost their lives in the course of their jobs in 2023, according to data from the Commission for Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST).
