The President of the Republic, who wants to make France an “essential place” for artificial intelligence, should also announce a summit on AI organized by Paris in 2025.

Emmanuel Macron will participate in a summit on artificial intelligence on Tuesday and will bring together the “talents” of the sector at the Elysée, before going to the VivaTech show on Wednesday, with the objective of “making Paris an essential place for AI ” around the world, the presidency said on Monday.

The President of the Republic will largely dedicate these two days to this “extremely strategic technology, which raises many questions but represents an important reservoir of growth”, detailed the Elysée Palace.

In line with the Choose France summit organized in recent days in Versailles to attract major foreign investors, the Head of State will participate Tuesday afternoon, by videoconference, in the closing of the 2024 edition of the Artificial Intelligence summit , organized in Seoul.

After the United Kingdom in 2023 and South Korea, France will organize the next edition of this summit in February 2025. The president will then bring together at the Elysée the “talents” of the sector for several round tables, such as Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, or Yann Le Cun, vice-president of Meta.

Paris, “power of AI”

Emmanuel Macron will then set out in a speech the “directions to go even further” in terms of artificial intelligence and make Paris “an AI powerhouse”, according to the Elysée. At the heart of this speech, announcements which will revolve around the recommendations of a committee of experts on generative AI, which submitted its report to the executive in mid-March.

The latter recommended in particular that France launch a national awareness plan, or even invest five billion euros per year over five years to be on par with the United States and China.

The President of the Republic should also announce the launch of several working groups to prepare the agenda for the AI ​​summit organized by Paris in 2025, with the particular objective of “establishing the modalities of global governance and framed by AI”, explained the Elysée on Monday.

France intends in particular to distinguish itself from the United Kingdom, one of the leaders in the sector, by not limiting the debate on AI to “existential risks of this technology”, detailed the presidency.

“There are other, more urgent and concrete issues regarding the deployment of AI and its use for the common good,” it was further clarified on the eve of these presidential announcements.

The Head of State will continue this dedicated sequence on Wednesday afternoon with a visit to the VivaTech show, the largest European event on new technologies, which takes place from Wednesday to Saturday in Paris and will largely devote its 8th edition to intelligence. artificial.
