New arrivals face the challenge of housing

Faced with the housing crisis in Toronto, one of the most impacted categories is that of newcomers. However, in the minds of some owners, new arrivals rhyme with insolvency due to lack of guarantees. From then on, abuses proliferate without having effective recourse available to this population which, in an emergency, very often accepts these practices contrary to the law.

The mother of all priorities for an immigrant, when he sets foot on the tarmac of the Queen City for the first time, is to have a roof over his head. The urgency is even greater when it comes to a family with children.

“What makes the task even harder is the pressure of having a lease in order to begin other very important procedures, such as registering my children for school or applying for the Ontario health card. These two procedures are dependent on the presentation of a residential lease or proof of domiciliation,” explains Meryem Fahssi, who arrived in Toronto with her husband and children last October, from Morocco.

As a reminder, limiting the rental of housing to people who do not have children is illegal in the province.

Up to one year’s rent in advance required

However, without a tax background or professional experience in Canada, finding accommodation is like an obstacle course.
