Chambéry: Savoie firefighters operate their new truck during a full-scale exercise

It’s a annual exercise which took place Tuesday May 14, in one of the oldest pedestrian streets in Chambéry. The scenario: a fire in a building, located in an “island”, a group of buildings in the city center that are difficult to access.

A new fire truck, with an articulated lifting arm 22 meters high

The challenge for firefighters is to intervene quickly in the particularly narrow streets and interior courtyards in Chambéry, surrounded by multi-story buildings. The life-size fire drill was therefore an opportunity to test the new firefighter intervention equipment, adapted to the accessibility constraints of the old center of Chambéry. “The new truck is equipped with a 22 m high articulated lifting arm, its nacelle allows it to carry out rescue, life safety and fire missions. specifies Sdis 73.

The technical characteristics of the BEA 22 truck:

  • A narrower (2.23 m wide by 7.95 m long and 2.40 m high) and lighter (7.5 tonnes) truck which allows access to alleys and interior courtyards, which is not possible with a conventional truck.
  • A first arm of 10 m, followed by a second articulated arm of 10 m to access the emergency zone in depth and height.
  • A basket allowing firefighters to go to the rescue zone and rescue victims.
  • A fire hose to put out fires in areas not accessible with the classic truck

The fatal fire of 2002 still present in the collective memory of Chambéry

These exercises have been organized every year since the deadly fire of January 2002 in Chambéry. On January 1, 2002, two young people aged 17 and 19 died in a fire in their apartment because a tree and Christmas decorations had caught fire in another home. Flames and smoke spread through roofs and attics. Since this date, the city of Chambéry has also very regularly organized operations to encourage residents to empty their attics of bulky items and other boxes which can lie around for years and which also encourage the spread of flames in the event of a disaster.
